The traditional Wing Chun Wooden Dummy was called a Dei Jong. This dummy was actually mounted into the ground. It wasn’t until the early 60’s that the modern Wooden Dummy was set up and used in day-to-day Wing Chun practice.

Grandmaster Ip Man was at a loss. He could not mount a traditional Dei Jong -- there was no place in Hong Kong to mount it. So, along with a master wood worker in Hong Kong, Ip Man worked on several designs over the next few years that could be used indoors. Finally, after many designs they developed a slat-hung dummy, it retained most of the spring and feel of the traditional dummy and, most importantly, still had all the specific angles needed to support and correct the technical positioning of the practitioner.

This training device normally costs anywhere from $500.00 to $1200.00 if you decide to buy a quality one already built. These quality dummies are very specific in the angles of the arms and width between them. The measurements are very specific; there are many dummies on the market today that are sold to Wing Chun practitioners that are really not Wing Chun specific. Some dummy versions are designs found in photos of Grandmaster Ip Man, most of these photos taken at this time were in his student’s house on that student’s personal dummy.

Carlos Colorado, the official Wooden Dummy maker of the Wing Chun Kung Fu Council since 1996, and an advanced Wing Chun instructor himself, explains the process of building the perfect Wooden Dummy in his popular book, “How To Build A Wooden Dummy.” Many color photos illustrate the process of making a dummy with the same exact measurements found on Grandmaster Ip Man’s personal dummy.

To help the builder understand more clearly, Carlos has included a set of measured drawings. These drawings, along with the illustrated instructions, can be used by you to build a personal dummy or taken to a master craftsman to do the work for you. This book is 53 pages long, 80 color photos, and 10 measured drawings. And is available as either an immediate download for $24.95 over the Internet, or on CD sent through the mail for $29.95.
